Looking through the fire finder. By lifting the eye up and down you can get elevation changes. By putting the needle crosshair right on the smoke, you can find exactly where the fire is with compass headings, map scaling, and geographic reference. Here the Tuscan Buttes are just above the crosshairs in Inskip's Fire Finder. This would be point a fire right at the base of Tuscan Buttes.
